ANCIENT TECHNIQUE TO BUILD SUSTAINABLE SPACES

TERRACOTTA - AS A BUILDING MATERIAL

  • Traditionally earthen pots were used to cool water.
  • In ancient times Egyptian slaves would fan the pot filled with water to blow cooled air on the pharaohs.
  • Similarly in India all the Havelis and forts are popular for channelizing  air through the stone jailers and Jharokhas. The intricate latticework on the windows breaks up the air flow, distributing it evenly.

  • This is an intersection of Art, nature and Technology.
  • Bringing technological advancement in computational design and material science
  • This is a collaboration of engineers, artist and potters to enrich our solutions.
  • Material used in construction should not end in land fill after its usage period.
  • But terracotta disintegrates and beautifully merges with nature.

The bee hive was designed as an art installation to solve the heat from the DG set
Terracotta was an obvious choice, easily available, long lasting and with high heat resistance.

In this situation hollow terracotta cones were stacked in a circular form like beehive.
The pot were soaked by pouring water over them. The geometry and shape of the cone help to accentuating the evaporative cooling decreasing the surrounding temperature.

The tank at the bottom helps to store the water which is then recirculated back to the tubes.
