Best Ferns for Mounting on the Wall

Ferns are popular for growing in shade. Most are in the genus Dryopteris, commonly known as woodland ferns. There are many to choose from – each frond often looks like a large shuttlecock with green leaves. These are divided into pairs of oppositely arranged leaflets, and may be repeated. The overall shape of each of these leaves – and then the shape and texture of the individual segments – is what makes these woodland plants unique.

Some woodland ferns have colorful amber or brown or black scales covering the spreading leaves, while others have leaves that turn an attractive autumn shade at the end of the season. Some form compact little specimens, contrasting with the spreading leaves of hostas and bergenia, while others spread into attractive colonies around mature shrubs. They do best in shade and moist soil, but once established, many woodland ferns will tolerate sun and drought.
